The Initial Results Are in for the Rediscovering Russia Student Expedition to the North Caucasus
KAVKAZ.RF summed up the initial results of the Rediscovering Russia student expeditions to the North Caucasus that were organised by HSE University and the Russia is the Land of Opportunities non-profit organisation. Drawing on the results of three expeditions, students prepared video depictions of six North Caucasus republics, developed a branding concept for Dagestani carpets, and drew up a new tour route through North Ossetia-Alania.
New Design Festival ‘Sreda’ 2022: HSE Art and Design School Again Named Educational Institution of the Year
The jury of the New Design Festival ‘Sreda’ 2022 have announced their winners. Projects by students, graduates and curators of the HSE Art and Design School have won prizes and received special awards, while the School was selected as the educational institution of the year for the second year in a row. Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.

On November 25th, the HSE Pokrovka building hosted the ‘The Whole World in HSE’ festival, which brought together HSE students from Indonesia, Korea, China and Armenia, as well as Europe, Latin America, and various Russian regions, to celebrate the university’s 30th anniversary.
Fall into ML: Autumn School and Conference on Machine Learning Held at HSE University
On November 1st-3rd, 2022 the International Laboratory of Stochastic Algorithms and High-Dimensional Inference of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis with the support of HSE AI Centre and the Russian Science Foundation organized the first autumn school and conference on artificial intelligence ‘Fall into ML’. The new format of the event included a school for students and young researchers.
HSE Geography Students Share Impressions of Field Practice in Volga Territories
Second-year students of the HSE Bachelor's Programme 'Geography of Global Changes and Geoinformation Technology' covered 4,000 kilometres in 20 days following a classical meridional route. They travelled to Cherdyn, a city in the north of Perm Krai with only taiga and polar bears beyond it, then continued far south to the Volga Delta. Between these two extreme locations, they studied the central feature of Russia's life and history: the Volga River and its basin.
HSE Faculty of Computer Science Team Takes Bronze at ICPC
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals took place on November 6–11 in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The team from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) took ninth place, winning bronze and achieving the best result among Russian universities.
‘Defining Yourself: Subject / Process / Identity’: New Exhibition Opens at HSE ART GALLERY
From November 9 to December 4, the HSE ART GALLERY is hosting an exhibition of works by students and lecturers of the HSE Art and Design School. The ‘Defining Yourself: Subject / Process / Identity’ exhibition lays the foundation of a multidisciplinary project about building connections between folk crafts, artistic practices, and modern research. The exhibition also has a parallel programme in the form of a curatorial excursion, an open talk, and an evening of performances.
Students of HSE Art and Design School Take All Prizes at ADCR Awards
Eight works by students of the HSE Art and Design School are among the winners in the ‘Students’ category of the ADCR Awards, a Russian professional competition in the field of creativity, design and advertising. HSE students won all gold, silver and bronze awards. Many student works were also included in the shortlist of the competition, while Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.
First-year HSE University Student Wins Silver in Informatics Olympiad
On October 23, the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics came to a close in Turkey. The Russian team, which included HSE University Faculty of Computer Science student Vladislava Sinitsyna, won two gold medals and two silvers. A total of 43 countries took part in the competition.
‘We Have Always Loved You, Sakhalin’: Research Expedition Studies Sociocultural Anthropology of Miners' Working Life in the USSR
Researchers from the School of Foreign Languages and the Group for Historical Research, together with students of the History programme at the HSE University campus in Perm, have come back from an expedition to Sakhalin Island, where they studied Soviet industrial culture and the working life of miners. The expedition participants shared their impressions of their ‘immersion into the past’ and the extraordinary landscapes of the island with the HSE News Service.
