Russian IT Freelancers Face Gender Discrimination
Olga Vilkova, a PhD student of the HSE University's Faculty of Social Sciences, has proved that IT engineers face inequality and discrimination on the Russian online freelance market—websites offering jobs for self-employed people. The researcher analyzed the data on professional success of 54,000 IT engineers registered on the major Russian freelancing platform FL.ru. The research is published in the Monitoring of Public Opinion: Economic and Social Changes Journal.
‘Comfort and Reason’: Students of Joint HSE-Garage Museum Master’s Programme Put on First Exhibition
The joint Master's programme of the Garage Museum and HSE University, ‘Curatorial Practices in Contemporary Art’, started in autumn 2019. Two years later, exhibitions prepared by student teams over the course of their studies are opening in Moscow. The first of them, ‘Comfort and Reason. Fragments of Artistic Life in Moscow in the 90s', is now on display at the Museum of Moscow.

‘Another City: Mystical Stories of Perm’ — this is the title of a work by Nikita Matkin, a first-year student in the Master's programme ‘Digital Humanities’. It received an honourable mention in the Best Russian-Language Scientific and Popular Science Works Competition for HSE University employees in the ‘History of Art’ track. HSE University to Take Action on Grade Inflation
HSE University’s administration is determined to prevent the lowering of grading standards for students’ academic performance. Teachers will be receiving new grading guidelines in the next two weeks. The proposed grading criteria will become mandatory for all courses. Other measures are planned as well. The list of such measures was discussed by the Rector’s Council on June 15.
Graduate School of Business Holds First Project Fest
The HSE Graduate School of Business (GSB) held its first open-air student festival, Project Fest by GSB, at Shabolovka. It was the final stage of the Student Groups Project Competition for the 2020/2021 academic year. Lectures, master classes, business games from students and business representatives, and educational and entertainment activities were also organised for all Festival visitors.
MIEM Holds Its Annual TechnoShow in an Updated Format
This year, the MIEM TechnoShow was held in a mixed online-offline format. The final key annual event of the MIEM project cycle featured 60 student team works. HSE Graduate School of Business Student Teams Win Flourish Prize 2021
In the contest organized by AIM2Flourish, students from various countries tell stories about companies that promote the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. HSE students won in the global goals of ‘Quality Education’ and ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ with cases of Kaspersky and VimpelCom PJSC (Beeline brand), respectively. They have become the first Russian representatives to earn these prestigious awards.
HSE Business Club Holds Its First Entrepreneurial Forum
This event was timed to coincide with Russian Entrepreneurship Day, which is celebrated on May 26. Forum attendees included not only students of HSE University, but also students from other Moscow universities. They were able to learn about internships in forum partner companies, as well as interacting in person with successful Russian business businesses.

The AMC Makeathon is an annual makeathon from the American Center in Moscow (AMC). This year it was held online and focused on ecology, environmental literacy, and the green economy. On May 20, first-year master’s students in the Marketing: Digital Technologies and Marketing Communications programme defended their projects. The event was the final stage of the first joint project between Effie Russia and theHSE Graduate School of Business (GSB). The students tackled cases involving social and environmental problems.
