Interethnic attitudes in polycultural space (by the example of Serbia)
On March 21 Elena Zivkovich took part in the "Culture matters" research seminar with the report "Interethnic attitudes in polycultural space (by the example of Serbia)".
The report reviewed the results of an empirical study (n = 536), conducted in Serbia, aimed at identifying features of inter-ethnic attitudes between the three ethnic groups (Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks), who are both former compatriots and former participants of an acute military conflict. It is revealed that the main predictors of interethnic attitudes (degree of social distance, tolerance, multiculturalism, preferred strategies of intercultural interaction, positivity / negativity of interethnic attitudes) are socio-psychological factors associated with the culture of ethnic groups (ethnic identity, religious tolerance and distance, cultural security / the threat, the status of the ethnic majority or minority in the country, etc.), the depth of inter-ethnic contacts (sense of connection with other and groups degree of familiarity with each other culture, etc.), as well as groups with readiness for reconciliation.
