Grants
1. RBRF, А 19-09-00309, "Hadramawt: a History of its Self-Identification (the 6th century AD - AD 1967)", Boss - Serge A. Frantsouzoff, 3 years (2019-2021)
From very ancient times Hadramawt stands out within Yemen as an autonomous historico-cultural area, so that the process of local states' formation was periodically taking place on its territory. Recently, when the Republic of Yemen de facto ceased to exist, having disintegrated into parts, Hadramawt again got a chance to become the center of attaction for lands of South Yemen (at least, of its eastern half) and to regenerate as a prosperous state (like the Sultanate of Oman). The interpretation of the changes, which occur there nowadays, is not possible without recourse to the history of the region. The monograph of Serge A. Frantsouzoff on Hadaramawt in the antiquity proves to be the starting point, while the project itself will be focus on its medieval and modern history (until the abolition of the British protectorate over South Arabia in AD 1967). It should be stressed that those periods of the historical development of Hadramawt have never before become object of a monographic research in Russian and Western scholarship, only few articles were devoted to their particular aspects. In the course of the realization of the project two volumes should be prepared: on of them, dedicated to the early Middle Ages (6th-12th centuries AD) will be based on a thorough analysis of all the available sources; the other is intended to highlight the blossom of the Muslim medieval society in Hadramawt and its decline resulted in the submission of the region to British colonialists. In that volume the accent will be made on conceptual issues, first of all on the problem of the self-sufficiency of the area and on the particularity of its development, not on a mere restoration of canvas of events reflected in a quite full manner in works of local historians. Besides that, the project implementation envisages taking part in conferences with papers and publishing articles on various aspects of the history of Hadarmawt for the last fifteen hundred years.
2. RBRF, А 19-09-41004 "Russia and the Patriarchate of Antioch in the XVIII-early XX centuries (executive)''.
Over the first year, we did a great job on searching and identifying new archival documents on the topic of the project in the repositories of Moscow (AVPRI) and St. Petersburg (SPb FA RAS, RGIA, OR RNL), during which a large set of new documents of various nature was revealed. We began work on decoding, translating and studying these documents. The first results of our researches were reported at three international scientific conferences and were reflected in four publications: three articles and a scientific publication of the Russian translation of “Vision of Jerome Agathangelos”.
Conferences
