Online-conference "Social and non-cognitive skills and labour market", organized within the framework of the HSE Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Centre, was held on September, 22, 2022.

4th IZA/HSE University Workshop: Thirty Years after the Fall of the Iron Curtain: The Contribution of Labor Market Adjustment to Transition and Convergence was held online on October 22-23th.

Although many studies point to highly negative trends in returns to education in Russia, the situation actually appears to be stable and without any signs of overinvestment in human capital. This is the conclusion of Rostislav Kapeliushnikov, Deputy Director of the HSE Centre for Labour Market Studies and Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The results of his research are presented in the article ‘Returns to Education in Russia: Nowhere Below?’ published in the 8^th issue of the Voprosy Ekonomiky journal.

What fields employees can hope to get high salaries in? What is the return on higher education? How is life expectancy related to retirement age? These and some other issues were discussed by experts at the First Conference ‘Labour Market: Demographic Challenges and Human Capital’ organized by the HSE Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Centre.

The ageing population may turn into a serious challenge despite seniors' improving physical and mental health. Rostislav Kapelyushnikov, Deputy Director of the HSE Center for Labor Market Studies and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, looked into the causes and possible consequences of falling birth rates and longer life expectancy.

Openness, friendliness, tenacity, motivation, risk-taking, self-control and other non-cognitive components of human capital can be important determinants of earnings. And parental investment in their children’s non-cognitive skills affects their future academic and career success. This is set out in the work of HSE University’s Centre for Labour Market Studies (CLMS).

The Higher School of Economics Publishing House presents the new book by the CLMS "The Russian Labour Market Through the Prizm of Demography" edited by CLMS Director Vladimir Gimpelson and CLMS Deputy Director Rostislav Kapeliushnikov.

The work was published in the WP3 series "Labor market issues" and studies the global recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Estimates suggest Russian GDP in 2020 will fall by 2–8%, meaning the current crisis may be more severe than the crises of 1998 and 2008. In the coming years, the Russian economy will have to recover and enter a new long-term growth trajectory. What sources and sectors can make this happen?

How Russians’ personal qualities influence their income level

The CLMS members participated in XX April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development which was held 9-12 April in NRU HSE in Moscow.

2nd IZA/HSE Workshop: Ten Years after the Financial Crisis - Labor Market Adjustment in Emerging and Post-Transition Economies was held in Moscow 11-12th October. Participants presented the results of studies dedicated to the analysis of labor market issues in post-transition and emerging economies. A special focus was on the process of labor market adjustment in the aftermath of the Great Recession and its consequences.

CLMS members participated in XIX April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development which was held 10-13 April in NRU HSE in Moscow.

Following a directive of the Rector, key HSE staff members have been awarded ‘Acknowledgement’ medals for their high professional achievements and devotion to work.

This prize is awarded to HSE staff who’ve authored the best books and textbooks while working at the University.

Golden HSE Award was bestowed to all members of the Centre for Labour Market Studies - Vladimir Gimpelson, Rostislav Kapeliushnikov, Nina Vishnevskaya, Anna Lukiyanova, Aleksey Oshchepkov, Anna Zudina, Anna Sharunina, Evgenia Chernina.

CLMS members were nominated for 5 monoghaphs published in 2006-2017 that were dedicated to the comprehensive analysis of Russian labour market.

New research by the CLMS Director Vladimir Gimpelson and the CLMS Deputy Director Rostislav Kapeliushnikov 'Age and Education in the Russian Labour Market Equation' was published as a working paper in IZA Discussion Paper Series.

The CLMS members participated in 3d International Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey of HSE User Conference which was held in Moscow on 19-20 May 2017 at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) with the support of Research Center “Demoscope”, Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

The NRU HSE Publishing House presents the new book by the CLMS staff 'Mobility and Stability in the Russian Labour Market' edited by CLMS Director Vladimir Gimpelson and CLMS Deputy Director Rostislav Kapeliushnikov.

On October 28, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) held a meeting to announce the results of elections of new members: 176 scholars were selected as academicians, and 323 scholars as corresponding members. HSE researchers are among the new RAS members.

According to HSE researchers, the higher a job applicant's wage expectations, the more likely they are to earn a higher wage in their next job.

Higher pay is usually the main argument in favour of a job change. Often, people can expect to earn more only if they change employers. In Russia, according to researchers from the HSE Centre for Labour Market Studies, labour mobility is higher among younger people, highly-skilled personnel, residents of big cities, and employees of foreign companies.

Director of the Institute of Demography, HSE, Tenured Professor Anatoly Vishnevsky was singled out for his outstanding contribution to Russian economic thought. The prize giving ceremony was in Moscow on 12th November.

On September 23, the new season of Professors' Wednesdays concerts will open in the newly renovated Professors' Club at HSE. The first to perform before audiences will be Elena Revich (violin) and Sergei Kuznetsov (piano). However, this year's programme will not stop with music.

The labour market in Russia differs from that in other countries. The Russian labour market does not react to decline and crisis with growing unemployment, and the market recuperates quickly. The reason for this is that employers have a great amount of flexibility; they do not fire employees, instead cutting their pay and work hours, according to the Deputy Director of HSE’s Centre for Labour Market Studies Rostislav Kapeliushnikov.

The average value of a statistical life in Russia stands at some $1.6 million, which is eight times less than in the U.K. and four times less than in the U.S. In countries where little value is attached to individual lives, the state is sending a signal that it is not planning to invest substantially in efforts to improve the life expectancy and safety of its citizens, conclude Tatiana Karabchuk, Marina Nikitina, Victoria Remezkova, and Natalia Soboleva in a paper published in the HSE's Economic Sociology journal
