The nomination of candidates for the Golden HSE Award closes on October 29. HSE Life spoke with jury members about why it is important to nominate your colleagues.
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities
‘The Golden HSE Award is a wonderful tradition of ours, and traditions, especially such wonderful ones, should be maintained. I invite my colleagues to take a few moments away from their their piles of work and think about those who have made life at the university, their faculty, institute, or research centre more meaningful, interesting, or at least made it a better place to work over the past year. Have any of your colleagues had any academic or teaching achievements that deserve to be recognized?
‘Look at the list of nominees – it’s likely to be incomplete: some wonderful people that you can recall right now might be missing from it. As soon as you mention that forgotten person’s name to your colleagues, they’ll say, ‘Of course! Why didn’t we think of her before?’
Is the one that is awarded by your fellow professionals
‘The obvious does not always catch one’s eye. Whoever is first to remember someone overlooked should speak up. Who else, but you, the person reading this article, should do it?
‘In my opinion, the nomination itself is a full-fledged award. Being nominated is an honour. The kind words and comments written by supporters are the second award, which is no less valuable. But when it comes to getting into the final three, much less the final, then luck and other unpredictable factors come into play. And the opportunity to present the first two awards to a worthy person depends only on us and our sense of fairness.’

‘For me, the Golden HSEs are a story about colleagues you work alongside but about whom you may not know much. I like to read the comments of support; they are sometimes over the top, sometimes touching, but, in my opinion, always very sincere, making you smile and feel happy for each other.
‘The Golden HSE has become a prominent part of our university culture. This award is about people, and people are the most important thing we have at HSE University, or, in economist's terms, our main asset that affects another important asset of HSE University — its reputation and international profile. This project is about involving different people of the university.
Here we have put together a list of frequently asked quesitons about who can win the award, how the winners will be selected and how you can support the nominees
‘The involvement of staff members is important in any organization, but for the university it is something very special, because its main “product” – its graduates – is good not only in the economic “applied” sense, when its quality is recognized only in the process of its “application”, but also in the sense that it is the result of interaction with “academics” and “non-academics” over the entire course of the university’s life.
‘There is little time left to nominate candidates in all of the wonderful HSE Award nomination categories. Tell your story about those who work with you!’
Director of HSE Campus in Nizhny Novgorod
‘I joined HSE University when the Golden HSE Award was already established. In this sense, for me the Golden HSEs are an integral part of the university life. It’s a natural and unconditional event as the first day of school (Knowledge Day) or New Year’s. This is a holiday that everyone anticipates. And this is a holiday that we create ourselves, by nominating colleagues, saying warm words, supporting each other and recognizing each other’s wonderful initiatives and achievements.
‘Everyone has his/her own image of the HSE University, which means that different people make HSE for everyone. The Golden HSE Award is an opportunity to tell them how important what they have done and are doing is to us. Let more colleagues know their value for HSE University. There is still time, and you should take advantage of it!’
