How to Recycle at HSE

Instructions from Green HSE

When campus garbage bins get full, Green HSE volunteers carefully check their contents to make sure they have been sorted in accordance with waste processing plant requirements. HSE Life got the details on how to properly sort your trash when throwing it away, so that recyclables get sent for recycling and don’t end up in the landfill.

Plastic Bottles

Make sure there is a PET or HDPE mark on the bottle (plastic types 1 and 2)

Rinse the bottle and lid with water to remove any residue from the juice / yogurt / soda

Crush the bottle and put it in the plastics bin. Throw caps away separately in a separate designated container

Don’t throw plastic containers from sandwiches/plastic plates/coffee cups/cellophane into the bottle bin - it is for bottles only.

All plastic bottles are sent to the Tver Polymers Recycling Plant, and the collected caps are sent to the Good Caps Project.

Collection points

Wastepaper

Collect all the notebooks, office paper, newspapers, and cardboard packaging you don’t need anymore

Make sure that the waste does not have any remnants of food, oils, or beverages

Remove any staples, staplers, and tape, and put the paper in designated boxes

HSE has an agreement with the Magis Wastepaper Recycling Company. Some departments organize joint wastepaper collection, so you can join your colleagues and organize joint wastepaper collection yourself or simply discard your wastepaper in the boxes placed in the halls of your building.

Please note that receipts and tickets printed on receipt paper, photos, and napkins are not recyclable.

Unneeded books can be put on shelves designated for bookcrossing. They are located in the following buildings: Basmannaya ulitsa, Bolshoy Trekhsvyatitelsky pereulok, Armyansky pereulok, 20 Myasnitskaya ulitsa, 33 Kirpichnaya ulitsa, 12 Malaya Pionerskaya, and Dormitory 10.

Collection points

Aluminum / tin cans

Make sure that the can / lid / other metal object has FE or ALU marks

Rinse the tin with water to get rid of any drink/food residue

Crush the tin so that it takes up less space and put it in the container

Do not put gas cylinders and rusted tins in the containers.

Collection points

Batteries

Put used batteries in a special container located at HSE building/dormitory

Next time use a reusable battery instead of disposable batteries
