At the end of 2019, the Centre for Institutional Research announced a competition for students taking part in the annual Student Life Survey.
In order to win a Yandex Station, Ozon certificates and other prizes the students were asked to share a story about student life or suggest how to make life at HSE even better.
During the first days of the new year, the organisers announced the results of the competition.
Anzhelika Kudryavtseva, 2nd-year student of the master’s programme’ Evidence-based Educational Policy’, came 1st in the ‘Cool story’ category. She received a Yandex Station.
Bulat Zagidullin, 1st-year student of the bachelor’s programme ‘Public Administration’, took 2nd place and a certificate from Ozon.
The following students also received prizes for the best stories about student life:
Alina Khalikova, 4th-year student of the bachelor’s programme in Sociology, and Iskander Ibragimov, 1st-year student of the master’s programme Project Management: Project Analysis, Investments, and Implementation Technologies’ shared first place in the Improvement category.
Iskander received a Yandex Station, while Alina got a OneTwoTrip certificate.
I filled in the survey and decided to take part in the HSE student life survey competition.
As part of the competition, you could write a story about your student life or suggest an interesting idea to improve life at HSE. I have lots of stories, but thought it better to suggest my ideas for improving life at HSE University.
1. Medical aid at HSE dormitories and buildings
Recently I felt sick one morning and decided that I need to check my blood pressure. I went to the attendants, they reluctantly shared their own tonometer and advised me to go to Odintsovo clinic. In extreme cases, of course, you can call an ambulance, but the paramedics come only for particular cases. I’ve heard that there is a first aid room at HSE on Myasnitskaya Ulitsa, but when I needed it, I couldn’t find it.
2. Waste sorting at HSE dormitories
In our dormitory, as well as in other HSE dorms, we only have receptacles for bottles, waste paper and batteries. I think that HSE administration could ask the recycling operator to install bins that collect a wider variety of refuse.
3. Waste sorting at HSE buildings
Green HSE volunteers are engaged in waste sorting and removing bags with plastic and metal at several HSE buildings (excluding HSE on Pokrovka). In my opinion,HSE administration could pay additonal money to cleaning services in all HSE buildings to take these bags away. HSE could also sign a contract with a recycling company to collect batteries, because now it is also done by volunteers.
4. Increased State Academic Scholarship for social activity
Every year it is becoming more and more difficult to apply for the Increased State Academic Scholarship due to the complicated application process. I think that presentation is enough to confirm the event, while the time allocated for organizing the event (currently only 6 hours) is not enough.
5. Elimination of the library card
It would be better if students were able to use their student pass to enter the library.
6. Foodsharing in cafeterias
The Green HSE volunteers tried to launch a foodsharing project, but we couldn't do it at HSE cafeterias, because they refused to cooperate for undisclosed reasons.
7. Discounts for using your own coffee cup
In Moscow, many cafes offer bring-your-own-cup discounts for coffee. We could also adopt this practice at HSE.
8. Meat free Mondays
In support of the fight against global warming, HSE could join the international movement ‘Meat free Mondays’ by removing meat products from the cafeterias’ menu and substituting them with vegetarian alternatives on Mondays.
The following students also received prizes for their improvement ideas:
