How to Spend Student Day in Moscow

Holiday events and discounts

In Russia, January 25 is Tatyana Day, a holiday in honour of students. Free skating rinks, wild journeys at HSE's Pokrovka complex, and specialty cookies from HSE cafeterias are just a few of the things HSE students can enjoy on the holiday. Read on to learn about how you can spend the holiday in Moscow.

Immerse yourself in wild travel

The HSE complex on Pokrovsky Boulevard will host a Wild Travel Festival. At the festival, you can meet and attend lectures delivered by experienced travelers at HSE Cultural Centre. Speaker Arseny Klinichev, for example, will teach you how to learn the basics of a foreign language before your trip so you can communicate with locals, while Lisa Chernetskaya will tell you about her experience hitchhiking from Moscow to Kamchatka.

Designer Katya Savitskaya will hold a workshop on how to turn an artistic vision into a real art object, including posters, sketchbooks, and books.

On January 25, the Wild Travel Festival will be held at the HSE building on Pokrovsky Boulevard. HSE Life shares why you should pull away from student worries and immerse yourself in adventure.

You can also attend master classes led by members of HSE's cultural clubs, watch a movie, and go to a concert by the indie band Lemu.

Eat specialty cookies

Although Student Day is not very popular at HSE, our cafeterias are eager to celebrate it with HSE students. Special cookies with the HSE logo will be served at the cafeterias at Malaya Pionerskaya and Tryokhsvyatitelsky Pereulok. Festive treats for students as well as anyone named Tatyanas will be prepared in other HSE buildings as well. The full list of events is available on the HSE cafeteria page.

Watch a movie

Grab your friends, your student card, and let’s go! On January 24-26, all students and anyone named Tatyana can receive tickets to the cinema for only 140 roubles (except for the films limited by the memorandum), and a small popcorn for 100 roubles in the Almaz cinema network.

We also recommend that you to visit the ‘Moskino’ cinema network. On January 25, tickets will cost only 199 roubles for students. Be sure to take your student card – you'll need it to receive the discount.

Go ice-skating

On Tatyana Day all students and Tatyanas are welcome to skate at Moscow's ice rinks. At 18:00, a dance flashmob with famous skaters will start at the main VDNKH skating rink, while the rink in Gorky park will celebrate the holiday with a skating disco, which also starts at 18:00. Please take your student card - both events will provide a ticket discount for students and cost only 250 rubles (including skate rental).

Students are also welcome to visit other rinks in Moscow.

There will also be free skating and skate rental for students at the ‘Journey to Christmas’ festival, but the ticket office will ask you to leave a deposit of 2000 rubles for renting sports equipment.

Think about your business

On January 26, the festival will continue at the Student Entrepreneurship Festival. At the event, students interested in starting their own business will be able to attend lectures by renowned entrepreneurs, musicians and writers. The band Khleb, Elena Temnikova, and rapper Mot will perform at the event.

The event will be held from 12: 00 to 22: 00 at the Megasport Sports Palace. The event is free, but registration is required.
