Festival Dedicated to Bohuslav Martinů and Czech Classical Music to Be Held at HSE University

Bohuslav Martinů / Centrum Bohuslava Martinu (Policka)

On Saturday, February 6, the HSE Centre of Music Projects will host an online music marathon ‘Composer Bohuslav Martinů: Unknown and Amazing’.

Much is known about the classical musical traditions of Germany, France, and Italy. But what about lesser known, but no less vivid national traditions, for example, the music of the Czech Republic? December marked the 130th anniversary of the birth of one of the classics, composer Bohuslav Martinů, and this is a wonderful occasion to learn more about Czech music.

Martinů’s compositions are not widely performed in Russia, but at home he is recognized as national classic. Having lived most of his life in forced emigration, he became known far beyond his country. What makes his music so beautiful? How does it combine such incongruous styles as French impressionism, jazz, and Czech folk motifs? Do modesty and isolation hinder the musician from gaining popularity? And why did Martinů remain in the shadows of his great contemporaries, such as Stravinsky, Hindemith, Schoenberg, in music history? We will discuss these and other questions with the participants of the online marathon while listening to the music.

Featured guests include Ekaterina Richter, pianist, mastermind and organizer of the anniversary Martinů Festival in Moscow, and Alexander Strakhov, pianist and the festival participant. Michaela Erzhabkova, Director of the Czech Centre in Moscow, will also take part in the event.

The marathon will begin at 14.00 on February 6.
