From March 22 to April 3, first-year undergraduate and specialist students can select minors. The general list of minors is already available on the website. HSE Life shares details about the selection process, obtaining a micro-degree, and popular subjects.
Minors are special modules within the structure of a bachelor's degree. They consist of four disciplines and allow students to gain competencies in a field unrelated to their degree programme. Students study the selected minor in their second and third years.
Minors prepare students for practical activity and provide them with an opportunity to receive a microdegree after training. A microdegree certificate confirms that the holder possesses additional professional microqualifications—competencies for performing certain tasks in a professional field.
On March 20, a personalised list of minors will be available to first-year students in the SmartWay system, taking into account restrictions on degree programmes and study tracks.
Places in minors are distributed according to an algorithm that takes into account the student's rating. This can be checked from March 16 in the LMS. If an error occurs, please contact LMS technical support immediately. It is also important to choose five priority minors in advance and declare them in time.
The first wave of the selection campaign will be held from March 22 to 24. The second will take place from March 30 to April 3 (for students who did not get enrolled on minors in the first wave). The full timeline of the campaign can be found on the website.
Teachers of the most popular minors have shared why students should choose their courses.
Supervisor of the minor ‘School of Business Trackers’
HSE University has taken first place in the ranking of entrepreneurial universities, and students of all fields of study can gain additional competencies in a wide range of minors related to entrepreneurship.
Business analytics and coaching are becoming more and more popular. Many business projects in a competitive environment need to be supervised by specialists who are able to critically evaluate the effectiveness of each stage of a product creation and the product itself, generate non-standard ideas for improving workflow, communicate with clients, analyse the project team and correctly assess future prospects.
Tracking hasn’t been taught in Russian universities yet. The uniqueness of this course and its flexibility towards emerging trends gives competitive advantages to students.
The training lasts four semesters, each of which is dedicated to an integrated discipline. In the first semester, students study ‘Business from Scratch’, which covers the whole process from coming up with an idea to creating a startup. They study ‘Product Commercialisation’ in the second semester, ‘Tracking Methodology’ in the third, and ‘Methods of Working with Content’ in the fourth.
Supervisor of the minor 'Language, Culture and Language Teaching'
We know that many HSE students speak excellent English and become tutors while they are still studying. For some graduates in the humanities, teaching foreign languages is often a second profession. That is how we got the idea to make a microdegree in addition to the main one.
Our minor is practice oriented. Students will learn about key concepts related to the study of foreign languages, cultures, and modern methods of teaching foreign languages, as well as acquire effective communication skills (including in business) and basic foreign-language teaching skills.
The course is taught entirely in English, which will be especially useful to those who are interested in exchange programmes and admission to international master's and doctoral programmes.
The minor programme covers general problems in applied linguistics, intercultural communication, pedagogy, psychology and didactics, as well as specialised disciplines in teaching foreign languages.
The catalogue includes such interesting and diverse fields as data analysis, UX design, neural network technologies, world politics, psychology, urban studies and much more.
