Results of HSE Minor Campaign Announced

© Daniil Prokofyev/ HSE University

In early April, the HSE minor selection campaign ended. More than 8,000 first-year students from HSE’s four campuses took part in it. HSE Life shares the procedure for allocating places in minors and covers the most popular minors this year.

The first wave of the selection campaign was held from March 22 to 24. The second wave took place from March 30 to April 3 (for students who did not get enrolled in minors in the first wave).

First-year students were allocated according to their percentile (the comparative characteristics of academic success), which was calculated separately before the start of the campaign. During the first wave, 7,806 first-year students applied for minors and the algorithm selected minors for 7,726 students. During both waves, more than 8,000 students chose minors to study, which reflects great interest among students compared to other years.

A total of 5,329 first-year students from all HSE campuses decided not to postpone the selection until the last moment, prioritising the subjects that were most interesting and significant to them on the first day of the campaign launch.

Popular Minors

This year, students were offered 93 minors to choose from, five of which are taught completely in English.

The top three most popular minors by number of applications from first-year students in 2023 were:

  • Psychology — 1,574 applications for 450 places
  • UX Design — 1,483 applications for 120 places
  • Skills of the 21st Century (communication, creativity, critical thinking, teamwork) — 1,290 applications for 150 places

Students who chose to study minors with applied results will receive a microdegree certificate upon completion.

In both waves, students with different percentiles were distributed more evenly across the minors than in previous campaigns, demonstrating that this year’s selection of minors meets the diversity of students' interests.

Based on the calculation of the average percentile of students, the following minors attracted students with the best academic results:

  • Data Mining (percentile — 11.92)
  • UX Design (percentile — 16.36)
  • Data Processing and Analysis (percentile — 30.82)

Thanks to the intercampus minor campaign, first-year students had an opportunity to submit applications for subjects that interested them without limiting their choice exclusively to their city of study.

This year, the largest number of students from different campuses in both waves were enrolled in the following five minors:

This year, students who have not been enrolled in the minor they are interested in for whatever reason can study it in addition to their programme curriculum for a fee. For more information on this option, please contact the staff of the Trajectory Service Centre.
