A Research and Study Group (RSG) is a team of researchers supervised by an experienced mentor that can include bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students, early-career teachers, and research fellows. Groups are created on a competitive basis. Projects receive support for one year, and may be extended for a further year based on the results of the first year of work.
The RSG competition, which is organised by the HSE Academic Fund programme, is unique for involving undergraduate and graduate students in group research activities under the supervision of an experienced mentor (a faculty member or research fellow), or teacher (the competition was previously called the ‘Teacher-Student Competition’) to implement specific research tasks. The core team can also include early-career, full-time teachers and research fellows. There are almost no restrictions on group composition—at the supervisor’s discretion, groups can include up to 10 students.
Since 2018, RSGs can be led by staff employed externally at joint departments of Russian Academy of Sciences research institutes. These are mainly projects by staff of the faculties of physics, chemistry, or biology.
Generally, projects are to be implemented over two years and should result in publications. As part of the project implementation, each Research and Study Group will create a page on the HSE University website containing up-to-date information on the project and materials from a research seminar organised by the group on a regular basis.
Every year, up to 20 promising projects receive support. More information on the competition is available here.
