First Aid Skills as Superpower Available to Everyone

The HSE Occupational Safety and Health Office is inviting HSE employees to take first aid courses

We all may find ourselves in situations where we need to provide first aid for a loved one, colleague, or random person. Medical knowledge and skills can help us to stay calm and confident in such situations. HSE teachers can attend a full-time first aid course, while a distance learning option is available to all employees.

It is worth remembering that first aid refers to a set of immediate measures aimed at preserving a person's life and preventing potential complications. First aid does not replace professional medical care, and should only be used when there is an actual threat to a person's health or life. Any HSE employee can master first aid skills through specialised training courses offered by the HSE Occupational Safety and Health Office in both full-time and online formats.

First aid courses are held in the following formats:

  • A 4-hour full-time course covers legal aspects, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) techniques, paediatric resuscitation skills, AED (automatic external defibrillator) use, stable lateral positioning for victims, bleeding control algorithms, and the Heimlich manoeuvre.
  • A 16-hour full-time course includes all of the above plus first aid for injuries, dislocations, burns, frostbite, hypothermia, stroke, heart attacks, epileptic seizures, and profuse bleeding. At the end of the course, participants will also complete a practical task using simulation materials to help them practice in a realistic setting.
  • A 16-hour distance learning course is similar to the 16-hour full-time course, except it does not include practical training.

The full-time courses are designed for employees who hold positions in the teaching staff category. All HSE employees are eligible to register for the distance learning course.
