MEDIAJAM is organised by the Institute of Media of the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) for students and teachers. Participants can express themselves in any creative field. In addition to students and staff of HSE University, the concert was attended by star guests—TV presenters Dmitry Guberniev and Maxim Sharafutdinov, opera singer Fyodor Rytikov, as well as special correspondents, political observers and many others.

Ernest Matskyavichyus

‘MEDIAJAM is a party where we can be ourselves, because the talents we have are outside our profession, outside our educational programme,’ said Ernest Matskyavichyus, Director of the Media Institute, journalist and TV presenter, in his opening address. He noted that in the creative profession, it is vital to raise your emotional and spiritual potential to its maximum. ‘Sometimes you want to be yourself, sometimes you want to express yourself in a way you can't in your daily routine. It's important—and most importantly, it's fun,’ said Ernest Matskyavichyus.

The Media Institute team, which prepared MEDIAJAM together with students, aims to make it one of the institute’s main traditions. ‘MEDIAJAM is definitely an image-building event for the Media Institute and FCI. We are always trying to explain to applicants and students that HSE University isn’t just about tough and challenging studies, but also an interesting extracurricular life,’ says Olga Blagodarova, Head of the Marketing Communications Centre at HSE University.

‘Our goal here is to bring people together. We want to show that HSE University is not about walls, but about people,’ added Alexander Artemov, Deputy Head of the centre. ‘This year's festival is even bigger, as demonstrated by the significantly increased number of people willing to show off their talents on stage, the number of spectators ready to support them, and the participation of external sponsors and star guests.’

The organisers are confident that MEDIAJAM will continue to develop as a flagship project of the institute.

To the delight of everyone in attendance, Ernest Matskyavichyus said that there are plans to stage the talent festival more than once a year.

After all the performances by HSE students and teachers—who sang, played musical instruments and danced—the results of the competition were announced. The winners included the Limbo cover dance duet; Arina Milai, who performed an opera aria; and Tatyana Akhumyan with her group, who gave a cheerleading performance. The main prize went to Mikhail Guberniev, who performed twice during the evening. The student of the Master's in Contemporary Journalism is a member of the Guber Band, plays the electric guitar, and sang a duet with his father, sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev.

For Daria Uryupina, a first-year student of the Bachelor’s in Journalism, the three hours of the event flew by. ‘I liked Mikhail Guberniev's performance the most; I love this kind of rock. He got the whole crowd going, and stirred up a lot of emotion from the crowd,’ she says.

Ulyana Sorokina, a first-year student of the Bachelor’s programme in Media Communications, attended MEDIAJAM for the first time and was very impressed. ‘I didn’t even know that many of our teachers could do this! The invited guests also surprised me a lot,’ she shared. She was especially impressed by Fyodor Rytikov, who performed two compositions, including the world-famous Italian song ‘Volare.’

Savva Yartsev and Violetta Kalina, first-year students of the Bachelor’s in Journalism, came to support their classmate Arina Milay. ‘It was so bright and contrasting when the Gubernievs came out, and then they gave their lyrical performance. You watch, switch your brain over—and are in awe of it every time,’ Violetta shared.

‘We experienced a huge range of genres and feelings today. But overall, it just leaves a huge impression inside you. You feel more alive after all this, because you are motivated to develop further when you see such wonderful people,’ Savva commented.

At the end of the show, Ernest Matskyavichyus thanked the participants and shared his impressions: ‘You are all so talented, so incredible! I think that if the concert had been broadcast nationwide, the numbers would have been through the roof. It was a powerful show, just breathtaking.’
