On May 23, 2014 HSE Perm’s Department of Foreign Languages announced the winners of its annual English language Olympiad for first-year students of all departments. The goal of the Olympiad was to identify students who have a deep knowledge of the subject.
The event had two rounds, the first of which saw the participation of all first-year students. Following the first round, more than 20 students were selected to continue on to the second, which consisted of a series of tests. The tests included listening and reading, as well as lexical and grammatical tasks. The difficulty level of the tests corresponded with the international Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) examination. This year’s winners were Yana Yurovskaya in first place, Yulia Rikhsieva in second and Alyona Pimenova in third.
The winners of the Olympiad will be awarded with diplomas at the annual student academic conference ‘The Language of Economics: The Way to Success,’ which is in English and set to take place today, May 29. This year participants will present reports and discuss such topics as the economic impacts of gambling, legal culture in Russia, the theory of public choice, problems of the Russian stock exchange, distinctions in the American legal system, social networking sites for business, U.S. sanctions and their potential impact on the Russian economy and many others. An academic poster session will also be held to showcase students’ work. This is new way of participating in the conference that was initiated by software engineering students.
