How Will You Spend Spring and Summer?

HSE’s Extreme Sports student club offers students, teachers and employees at HSE, and their friends, the opportunity to take part in a series of spring and summer trips. Trips on offer include: hiking through Crimea and Abkhazia, climbing Europe’s tallest mountain – Mt. Elbrus, an expedition to the Sayan Mountains and a surf camp in Portugal.

Crimea

May 2 - 9

‘Do you want an unforgettable May holiday? Then pack your rucksack, we’re going hiking!’ says the head of HSE’s Extreme Sports club Garry Rutberg. ‘It’ll be one of the most interesting and diverse routes through Crimea, in just one week you will see all the local sights: Ghost Valley, solution caves, waterfalls, and ancient and medieval ruins. The breathtaking landscape will enthrall you  -  and your friends when you upload photos to your social media accounts. Every day of the trip you’ll see a new landscape: beech forest, shady canyons, breathtaking cliffs, rock plateaus.

Abkhazia, Sochi

May 3 - 9

Accommodation in New Athos will be provided (comfortable houses on the sea shore for 2 people).

The programme includes: visiting New Athos caves – one of the largest karst caves in Europe, and New Athos Monastery, a trip to the Ritsa lake, trekking to the Mza mountain lake, horse-riding, a visit to the renowned monkey zoo, and tours of Sukhum, the capital of Abkhazia.

The final day will be spent at Sochi Olympic Park, with a visit to the Autodrome and Russia’s largest theme park Sochi Park.

The number of places is limited, so be sure to decide quickly.

Elbrus and pre-Elbrus

July 11 - 30

Two trips to the Elbrus are currently planned: July 11-20 and July 21-30. Some participants want to go on both trips. The Elbrus is Europe’s highest peak, 5,642 meters above sea level. During acclimatization, the groups will take radial approaches, crossing mountain-ranges, valleys and canyons. Visitors will enjoy pine and beech forests, mineral water springs, picturesque rivers, lakes and waterfalls.

Accommodation will be provided in 2 and 3 person hotel rooms 5 minutes from Cheget and the ski-lifts. Climbing Mount Elbrus peak does not require special training, and the student club’s experienced trainers can help you acquire all the necessary trekking skills. Western Sayan

August 16 - 31

This trip will go to the renowned Ergaki nature reserve in Krasnoyarsk Territory, bordering with the Republic of Tuva.

The level of difficulty in the trekking through the mountainous regions of Western Sayan (easy – moderate) will depend on the group’s abilities. Rock and mountain climbing skills will be taught en route. Equipment will be provided by the Club’s tourist division.

Peniche (Portugal)

August 22 - 29

The end of August is the best time for surfing off the coast of Portugal. The trip includes 4 hours surfing per day with certified international instructors who will train novices and help improve experienced surfers’ skills.

Comfortable wifi-enabled ocean-front accommodation will be provided. In the evenings – fires on the beach or barbeques, and local restaurants offer a wide range of regional fare cooked with fish and seafood fresh from the ocean. HSE’s Extreme Sports student club has a 160-year track record of organizing joint trips for SE students and teachers, and in winter and summer sporting competitions. Thanks to the Club’s organizers and active members trips up Elbrus, rock-climbing and camping in Crimea, and water expeditions ranging from 2-5 in difficulty are offered.
