72 master’s and 22 PhD students at HSE have won scholarships from the Oxford Russia Fund. Those studying in Moscow from Sept 2015 - June 2016 will receive 10,000 roubles while students at the Perm, St Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod campuses will receive 6,000 roubles each.
The grant which is allocated for one academic year, is paid on a monthly basis and cannot be extended. The competition is open to first and second year master’s and first year PhD students at the fund’s partner universities. HSE became a partner in 2005 when the Oxford Russia Fund was first set up. Now the list extends to 20 Russian universities.
The aim of the fund is to develop education in the humanities in Russia. The organisers believe that specialists in the humanities play an increasing role in the world today while most international funds and grant-giving bodies continue to focus on natural sciences and business research. As well as providing financial support for talented students, the fund organises winter and summer schools to facilitate cooperation between Russian and British centres of education.
