In summer 2014, students from the HSE Faculty of History traveled to Staraya Ladoga in the Leningrad Region for archeological training.
The trip began with a sightseeing excursion around the town of Novaya Ladoga, which is located 10 kilometers from Staraya Ladoga. The students first visited a memorial complex dedicated to the defenders of the ‘Road of Life’, where the two warships were exhibited. The ‘Road of Life’ is the route across the frozen Lake Ladoga, which provided the only access to the besieged city of Leningrad during World War II. The road was used to transport food and various supplies. Electricity was transported along the bottom of the lake.
The students then visited the Novaya Ladoga Museum of Local History and Tradition. Its exhibition covers three main periods in the town’s history. The museum custodian was so happy to see so many visitors that she turned on a vintage gramophone and then played a military drum solo.
The last destination was Nikolo Medvedsky Monastery. The students observed the town surroundings and enjoyed the beauty of the nature from the monastery viewing platform.
All the participants were greatly impressed by the entire excursion.
