A Russian team made up of Economics & Statistics students of the HSE Faculty of Economics took part in the 3rd International Statistics Olympiad, held in Tehran, Iran, from August 7 – 11, 2016. This was the first time our students had participated in the contest, and they took second place, losing only to the host team, which consisted of the winners of a national student test in statistics.
Members of the team were students who graduated from the third year of the undergraduate programme: Viktoria Guseva, Anna Emzesheva, Alexander Zazulin, Evgeny Ivanov, and Alexander Shegolev. Anna Emzesheva and Alexander Shegolev took bronze medals in the individual all-around event. Prof. M. Arkhipova and V. Sirotin prepared the team for the competition.
The students shared their impressions about the Olympiad:
It was interesting to try my hand in the different rounds of the Olympiad (theoretical statistics, mathematics, applied statistics) and see my strong and weak sides as compared with the other participants. It was nice to realize that our students took the leading positions in applied statistics – non scholae, sed vitae discimus!
The Olympiad organization exceeded all our expectations, and we are very grateful to the organizers for the opportunity, and to the Faculty of Economics for the support. In academic terms, the Olympiad was a chance for us to assess our level of preparation, to see our strong and weak sides, as well as to talk to students and professors from various countries. The tasks in all the Olympiad blocks were interesting and unconventional. I hope that our Economics & Statistics educational programme will continue participating in this international statistics contest.
Iran impressed me with its hospitality. Many thanks to the organizers! The Olympiad was very well organized, and the accommodation was good. The Olympiad was an invaluable experience for me. As an example, in the 3rd round in applied statistics we had to master new software packages, since there were no programs we’d used before.
An interesting feature of the Olympiad is its changing location: every year, it is held in various cities of Iran, and each time a leading university in the region supports it. Such a mechanism promotes the integration of Iran’s leading universities in the global educational environment.
Remarkably, there were a lot of teams from many different countries in all the disciplines. The organizers have set a high standard for the event and set a lot of complicated but interesting tasks. It was a real trial for us, and I view our second place as a victory.
