15 HSE Students will Go to Singapore

On October 20th 2011 the winners of a competition organized by the HSE Innovation and Enterprise Office were announced, with the successful entrants going on to visit the National University of Singapore from January 13th – 20th  2012 as part of a student exchange programme.

As part of this programme, a delegation of students from Singapore will come to Moscow from May 11th – 18th, 2012. The title of this programme is ‘International Students Alliance for Global Entrepreneurship’ (ISAGE). This is a platform for the exchange of ideas between universities from different countries interested in entrepreneurship. This programme is an initiative of the students of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and they have been running it for several years now, in partnership with other leading universities from around the world. In 2012 the Higher School of Economics will be part of this project.

As part of this, the Russian students will independently develop a programme for their guests’ visit, including master classes by successful entrepreneurs, visits to companies, roundtable discussions, other activities related to entrepreneurship and of course some cultural events.

The combination of not only the chance to travel to Singapore but also to help organize a visit by overseas students to Russia, proved very popular, with over 100 applications from students of 11 HSE faculties (including HSE regional branches). According to HSE staff, this proves that the students are interested in searching for new business ideas and opportunities for creating and developing their own successful startups.

Most of the applications were from the faculties of Sociology (19 applications), Economics (13), World Economy and International Affairs (12) and Business Informatics (11). Students from the HSE Nizhny Novgorod Branch also participated in the competition (13 students) and are ready to collaborate with the Moscow student team in the preparation of the visit and discuss the development of innovation entrepreneurship in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Despite the fact that there were only two applications from the HSE Saint Petersburg branch, the commission specifically mentioned the quality of the application from Timur Butukhanov, a student of this branch, and he is the representative from Saint Petersburg in the winning team.

A total of 15 students will take part in the trip to Singapore. They will be headed by Ivan Kolykhalov, a third-year student of the HSE Faculty of Economics, who not only has actively started to implement some of the ideas of the programme, but is also planning to develop similar initiatives under the auspices of the HSE itself. We should say say that generally this idea turned out to be so popular among the HSE students that even those who weren’t selected to go to Singapore are still interested in particpating in the Russian part of the programme.

Once the ISAGE exchange programme has been successfully completed, the HSE Innovation and Enterprise Office will further support similar such projects with the HSE’s many partner universities, including institutions in the USA such as the University of Arizona, the University of Texas at Austin, and those in  Europe, the University of Twente, the University of Sheffield and others.
