The 20th January 2014 was the closing date for the tender of three-year projects to establish new international laboratories at the HSE under the supervision of leading international researchers. The HSE campuses made 49 applications in 19 areas of study. All of them were reviewed by independent Russian and international experts, and for each project scientometric indicators were estimated for the researchers and potential laboratory heads.
As a result of the deliberations under the HSE Rector’s supervision, it has been decided that the HSE will support eight projects. Two were presented as already functioning research units at the HSE: the International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences and the Neurolinguistics Laboratory. The following six projects were approved during the Academic Council session:
As Marina Yudkevich remarked, “there were a lot of interesting applications”, so the HSE decided not to limit itself to financing only eight new laboratories. Fifteen more applications will be approved, but supported in a different way: the HSE will provide grants to employ leading international researchers, and to support academic mobility for research groups, but not to establish laboratories. Four HSE vice-rectors will carry on negotiations with the interested parties.
The Academic Council also confirmed the results of a competition among teaching staff, and adopted new procedures to evaluate publication activity levels.
