56th Convention of the International Studies Association
From the 18th to 21st February the biggest American (in fact international — like the American Association of Political Science) professional association of researchers in international relations, global politics and comparative politics, the International Studies Association held it’s 56th annual convention, this time in New Orleans. As in recent years, more than 6,000 participants came from all over the world.
Several of our colleagues represented HSE at the convention — Natalia Morozova, Associate Professor at the Dept. of Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, HSE Nizhny Novgorod, Andrej Krickovic, and Yuval Weber, Assistant Professors at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs — and Andrei Melville, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Andrei Melville presented a paper 'Why and When an Autocrat May be Motivated to Improve the Quality of Institutions.' Andrej Krickovic and Yuval Weber spoke on Russia as a modern day continental power. Natalia Morozova gave a talk on Russia’s evolving idea of Humanitarianism: between sovereignty and human rights.
The ISA elected Professor T.V. Paul of McGill University, Canada, to be the new president for 2016.
Former ISA president, Professor William Thompson and ISA’s executive director Thomas Volgy will be honoured speakers at the 16th April Conference on Economic and Social Development 2015 at HSE. Professor Thompson will deliver a lecture on Norms, Behavioral Compliance, and Status Attribution in International Politics and Professor Volgy on The Attribution of Status in the International System: Realist and Normative Considerations and both of them will take part in the session, M-04. State Capacity and Durability/Vulnerability of Authoritarian and Hybrid Regimes.
