From April 1 – 2, 2016 a delegation from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, headed by Deputy Minister Liudmila Ogorodova, visited Athens.
As part of the visit, a memorandum of understanding between the Russian Ministry of education and Science and the Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs was signed. The memorandum implies joint investment in research projects aimed at developing cooperation between the two countries’ research institutions.
In 2016 and 2017, these partners are going to invest in at least four research projects that were selected as part of a joint competition and on the basis of independent expertise in quantum technology. The first competition will take place in 2016 in the following areas: quantum nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, quantum information technology, and quantum metamaterials. Future competitions will be dedicated to other high-priority areas of cooperation, including humanities, the agricultural and food industry, the power industry, and aeronautics.
Together with the official ministries’ programme, a Greek-Russian Scientific Workshop on Quantum Technologies took place in Athens at the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’.
Liudmila Ogorodova, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and other officials gave a welcome address at the workshop. Over 20 academic papers were presented as part of the event. HSE was represented by Konstantin Arutyunov, Professor at the MIEM School of Electronic Engineering. Most of the second day of the workshop was dedicated to preparing joint Russian-Greek projects for the project competition in quantum technology.
All the workshop participants had a nice surprise when they heard the European Commission’s announcement on the first day of the workshop about the international conference Quantum Europe: a New Era of Technology, which will take place from May 16 – 17, 2016, and aims to develop ‘a comprehensive strategy for Europe to stay at the forefront of this emerging (quantum) technology.’
