Professor Tatiana Sidorina Presents Report in Vienna

HSE Philosophy School Professor Tatiana Sidorina gave a presentation on ‘Globalization threatens central social institutions: employment and the state’ at the International Association of Sociologists’ third forum ‘The Futures We Want: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World’ in Vienna.

From July 9-14, Vienna University in Austria hosted the International Association of Sociologists’ third forum. It brought together over 5,000 sociologists from across the world. We congratulate our colleague, Tenured Professor Tatiania Sidorina, on presenting her research at this key international symposium.

The main trends in global development, Professor Sidorina believes, are fundamentally changing the balance of powers in contemporary society. Society today is developing along the lines of global capitalism, on the face of it, formed by the international neoliberal capitalist economy.

In this environment, key social institutions find themselves facing crisis. Neoliberalism is fighting for a borderless world – not for labor, but for capital.

This crisis is evidenced by developments in one of the main areas in society – the labor sector – in which we see a degree of confusion over its role, status and significance. On the one hand, the blue-collar labor market is contracting, and those workers are increasingly likely to find themselves jobless. On the other hand, global labor practices are changing, and with them – the classic employment model - and labor is no longer a necessity for survival. But labor is still needed. So how can one define the role labor plays in this equation? How does the changing role of the fundamental components of the system impact on human life and society? These are the questions that Professor Sidorina examines.

A report on the event can be found on the website of the International Association of Sociologists.
