HSE University Life

Dr. Sabyasachi Tripathi, from Kolkata, India, is a new research fellow at HSE University. He will be working at the Laboratory for Science and Technology Studies of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge.

Originally from Greece, Pános Kompatsiáris was attracted to join the Higher School of Economics because of the university’s reputation for exceptional working conditions and fostering career development. Having spent the last ten years in a variety of cities, including Edinburgh and Berlin, Professor Kompatsiáris brings his background in economics, cultural studies and art theory to his current position as Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design at HSE.

On July 8, amendments to Russian migration legislation regulating the registration of foreign citizens coming to the Russian Federation came into effect. They concern, in particular, HSE’s international employees and students. The most important change: you now must be registered at the place where you actually live.

Сommunity, and an actively engaged one at that, is a vital part of university life. From the large-scale events which are part of the institution’s brand to the grass-root initiatives, everything thrives on genuine and shared interest, and in this issue of The HSE Look the editors would like to share several stories which might inspire to join the existing projects or start new ones.

Mauro Mariani, a mathematician from Italy who is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE, studies probability theory and statistical mechanics. Prior to joining HSE in 2017, he held faculty positions in France and Italy after obtaining his PhD from the Sapienza University of Rome.

In this issue of The HSE Look, we would like to focus on three of the many seminar series which are held at HSE, and we are glad to present the interview with Ulrika Carlsson, Assistant Professor at the School of Philosophy, about the Philosophy Colloquium at HSE Moscow.

In the 34th issue of The HSE Look presents St. Petersburg campus in an interview with its Director Sergey Kadochnikov and with DAAD long-term Associate Professor at the School of History, Dietmar Wulff. As per tradition, The HSE Look gives brief introductions of the new tenure-track faculty which joined HSE this September. In this issue the editors are launching a new feature: a column ‘Discovering HSE and Russia’ written by international faculty for their colleagues so as to help them explore the rich cultural and geographical variety offered by Russian cities.

Christopher Brav, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Mathematics, joined the Higher School of Economics in 2014 after holding several teaching and research positions abroad. The HSE news service recently had the opportunity to speak with him about his research interests, teaching philosophy and how he has settled into life in Moscow.

Navid Hassanpour, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences (School of Political Science) at the Higher School of Economics, is the author of ‘Leading from the Periphery and Network Collective Action’ published by Cambridge University Press in December 2016. He recently spoke with the HSE News Service about his current course at HSE, expansion of the Master’s programme in Applied Political Science, and his plans for upcoming research.

Svetlana Cecovic, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Humanities (School of Philology), came to the Higher School of Economics with the aim of working in an international environment, which she had become accustomed to during her PhD studies at the University of Louvain in Belgium.

Adapting to a new university environment can be a difficult process, especially with such a thing as teaching classes, where not only teacher’s own abilities but also formal requirements and the academic culture of the institution come into play. In previous issues of The HSE Look (October 2015, May 2014, September 2013) we covered different aspects of teaching at HSE, such as the module system, assessment regulations, syllabus design, finding teaching assistants and using electronic Learning Management System.

Each year HSE hires post-doctoral researchers, accepting applications from all over the world, and they join various laboratories and centres. Some of them kindly provided additional information about their research interests and background, and The HSE Look continues the tradition of introducing HSE’s new international faculty and researchers.
