The latest issue of the HSE LooK brings the Faculty of Mathematics  into the spotlight. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor  Sergei Lando, speaks about mathematical education in Russia then and now and gives his insights into the academic life of the mathematical collective. The editors also welcome aboard new colleagues with international backgrounds and give a short overview of changes that have occurred on HSE website, including new design of faculty profile pages.

Yuval Weber, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, has been with HSE since 2014. A specialist in international relations, Weber has held fellowships at the New Economic School and the Carnegie Moscow Center. He recently spoke with HSE news service about his longstanding interest in Russia, his impressions of teaching HSE students and his advice for international students who are thinking about coming to Russia.

HSE would like to congratulate Udara Peiris, Assistant Professor at ICEF on having his article ‘Collateral and the Efficiency of Monetary Policy’ accepted for publication in the international peer-reviewed journal ‘Economic Theory’.  The article was coauthored by Alexandros Vardoulakis, Economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Karl Bruckmeier is an environmental sociologist and since 2011 he has been a professor at the Analysis of Social Institutions Department at the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences. He talked to the HSE English News Service about the challenges of being an interdisciplinary academic and about the pace of change in Russia in attitudes towards the environment. Anna Chernyakhovskaya began the interview by asking Professor Bruckmeier about his life at HSE.

The Faculty’s Dean, Oleg Zamulin, explains how the faculty was formed and outlines the current major development priorities. The editors also welcome aboard new international professors, who began their work at the university, and draw readers’ attention to the calls for papers for PhD Seminars planned as part of the XVI April International Academic Conference.

Christopher Gerry, the Academic Supervisor of the Department of Humanitarian and Social Sciences, has worked at the Higher School of Economics’ St. Petersburg campus since September 2014. Professor Gerry previously taught at University College London, where he conducted research on the economics of healthcare. More specifically, Professor Gerry studied how the economic situation affects a population’s health and the reforms BRICS countries carry out in this sphere.

HSE’s Nizhny Novgorod campus has a new professor. Invited Professor Rajarshi Mitra teaches advanced microeconomics to master’s and Ph.D. students, as well as time series analysis and the academic seminar ‘Econometric Analysis and Modeling in Economics and Finance.’ Professor Mitra comes to the HSE from India, though he has many years of experience working and teaching in the West.

The Higher School of Economics is becoming more and more internationalized. It is for this reason that HSE Day, which took place at Gorky Park, reached an international level as well. Among the numerous activities at the event were ones that featured English as their main form of communication. Thanks to this, international students, foreign instructors, and all guests of the celebration who wanted to speak English were able to feel they could take full participation in the events.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has approved an application to create a long-term associate professorship at the HSE Faculty of History in St. Petersburg. Dr. Dietmar Wulff will hold this position.
