There are many strange things in the academic: scientists are researching street fighting math, porn studies, Harry Potter anthropology, and even queer death studies. But not all of these amazing research fields have been widely recognized. IQ.HSE and HSE Student Initiative Support Centre announce an essay competition for Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral students of all HSE campuses. 

Maria Kochneva, a 4th-year student of the Faculty of Management at HSE Nizhny Novgorod presented her report at the ‘Gender and Sexuality in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia: Past and Present’ conference held at the University of Nottingham. Maria shared her impressions of the event with the HSE news service.

From May 26 – 27, 2016, the European Society for Research in Adult Development 2016 Symposium took place in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Svetlana Strinyuk, Associate Professor at the School of Foreign Languages at HSE Perm, presented a report ‘Identity through Violence Aestheticization: murals in Derry and Belfast’ at the 5th international conference CONTEMPART 2016. The conference was dedicated to issues of urban identity, urban space and contemporary art and took place in Istanbul.

Mark Evlampiev, student of the Master’s programme 'Project Management: Project Analysis, Investments, and Implementation Technologies', measured the level of happiness in the urban environment using data from the social network Instagram in the city of Perm.

The Director of the HSE Centre for Source Studies presented his research on the role of ‘administrative entrepreneurs’ in the development of early education and other state institutions in Russia under Peter the Great.

On August 3rd-8 th  2015, a working group from the International Research Project ‘Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism’ took part in the ICCEES Congress in Japan.

On June 24-26, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University hosted the conference ‘Creative Industries and Sustainable Development: Bridging Theory and Practice’ in Vilnius, Lithuania. The main focus of the conference’s papers and discussions was the end of the year-long KAVA project ‘A Complex Research on the Impact of Environmental Factors on a Creator,’ in which more than 10 international universities, including HSE St. Petersburg, took part.

Alexander Lukin, Head of the School of International Affairs took part in the International Symposium on ‘BRICS-II: Institutionalization & Macau’, which took place on May 6-7 in Macau, Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

Eastern European history shows that in the majority of post-Soviet countries, where lustration was carried out in one form or another, the situation with corruption is now considerably better than in those countries where lustration was not carried out. But what we see in Slovenia is, in fact, an clear deviation from this pattern. The Slovenia phenomenon has been analysed in the article ‘Fighting Corruption: The Slovenian Phenomenon’ by Yuliy  Nisnevich, Professor at the School of Political Science, Academic Supervisor of the Laboratory for Anti-Corruption and Heather Stetten, independent researcher (USA).

For 8 years ISSEK has been participating in an international project to study the specific features of BRICS’s national innovation systems (NIS). Earlier this spring the participants gathered to discuss the project’s new phase.
