First Official Friend of HSE Receives Award
During his business trip to Pantheon-Sorbonne Paris 1 University, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov awarded Michel Sollogoub with the first Friend of HSE statuette in the history of the Golden HSE Award.
Anna Dupan is awarded for her substantial contribution to legal research
Anna Dupan, director of HSE Institute of Legal Regulation, was recently recognized with an award from the rector of HSE, Yaroslav I. Kuzminov, for substantial contribution to the development of applied legal studies of the HSE.
‘Over the Last Two and a Half Years Five Russian Universities Have Joined the World’s Top-100 in Various Subjects’
HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov updated the President of Russia Vladimir Putin on the implementation of the Academic Excellence Project 5–100. He also suggested extending the project until 2025 and setting the objective that at least one Russian university be included in every subject-specific ranking by 2025.
Laureates of Golden HSE 2016
On December 20, 2016, the ZIL Cultural Centre hosted this year’s Golden HSE awards ceremony. This year saw several significant changes to the award rules: new nominations have appeared, many of them were divided into categories for different groups of employees — all to help ensure HSE was able to express its gratitude to a larger number of worthy candidates.
Educational Studies Moscow Indexed in Scopus
The decision was made by the Scopus Expert Council after a two-year examination of the journal published by HSE. The editorial board of the journal Educational Studies Moscow applied for indexing in the Scopus database in 2014 (the application process takes a long time). The Scopus Expert Council has regularly monitored the journal’s development over the two years since the application was made. There are strict requirements for paper and e-formats of the journal, as well as for the quality of research results published.
Cities of the Future Must be Sought in the Present
Shukhov Lab, a Laboratory for Experimental Urban Design, has opened at HSE. Participants in a roundtable discussion dedicated to the laboratory’s opening agreed that to create the cities of the future, the present must be analyzed without adjusting to the forecasts.

On December 7, at a meeting of the International Advisory Committee, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov discussed the changes underway at the university and explained how the Higher School of Economics is working towards true international competitiveness as part of the 5-100 Project.
'At Least One Russian University Should Be in the Top-100 of Each Global Ranking Category'
On October 19, the rectors of 21 top Russian universities met to discuss Russia’s position in international university rankings. These 21 universities are all are members of the Global Universities Association, the main purpose of which is to create a network for and inspire collaboration among schools participating in the widely discussed Project 5-100. Slated to last eight years, this project was established under Russia’s Presidential Decree No. 599, which aims to improve the standing of Russian universities among the world’s top schools and research centres.
Faculty of Physics Opens at HSE
Students at HSE will be able to enroll in undergraduate and Master’s programmes in Physics, starting in 2017. Furthermore, including those working on doctorates, students will also be able to carry out research not only at HSE laboratories, but also several leading institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), which are launching joint departments with our new faculty.
