Russian publications in leading journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) were registered in 2015, a historic record in terms of Russian publication activity.

This data is presented in the latest issue of the newsletter ‘Science, Technology and Innovation’ by HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge.

Experts note that the total publication activity by Russian scholars in scientific journals indexed in WoS, was about 30,000 publications per year in the 2000s - comparable to levels seen in Switzerland, Taiwan and Turkey. Between 2001 and 2015 the proportion of Russian publications in the overall international publication flow changed significantly.

In absolute terms, the number of Russian publications in leading international journals went through a noticeable decline in the first half of the 2000s, and experienced a period of stagnation in mid-2001-2015, but started to grow dynamically, peaking at its historic maximum of 40,200 in 2015.

The proportion of publications by Russian authors in scientific journals indexed in WoS has undergone similar changes.  It increased by 1.3 times over the past three years, indicating a slight advance in comparison to global growth rates of publication activity.
