School of Linguistics Develops Research Web Service ‘Textograph’

On September 15th, 2016, a presentation of the research web service ‘Textograph’ for the digital processing of texts was held in the House-Museum of Anton Chekhov. Boris Orekhov, Associate Professor at the School of Linguistics, is one of the system developers.

The service allows you to facilitate the creation of manuscript electronic transcriptions, to overlay text on images, and to trace and visualize the creative history of the work. In addition to manuscripts ‘Textograph’ can also be used for processing typewritten and printed texts.

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation initiated the development of this service in order to process manuscripts by Leo Tolstoy. The first documents digitized by ‘Textograph’ were the manuscripts of ‘War and Peace’.

The developers plan to pay special attention to the design of the exposition features of the service. The idea for the service belongs to Fekla Tolstaya, great-great-granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy, and Boris Orekhov, Associate Professor at HSE School of Linguistics.
