On the 15^th-16^th November on the eve of the “Crossroads” Russia- Holland year, HSE held a conference for the directors of leading universities in Holland and Russia. “The Russia-Holland inter-university partnership: new academic and scientific priorities.”

From November 15^th – 16^th a conference of the Russian-Dutch Universities Leaders ‘Russian-Dutch University Partnerships: Shaping Innovative Academic and Research Agenda’ will take place at the HSE. Olga Moshkova, HSE Director for International Cooperation, told us about aims of the conference.

A special issue of ESforum, a bulletin on economic sociology, was published in English.

On October 30^th at a regular ‘Topical Research and Development in Education’ seminar at the HSE Institute for Educational Studies, Alastair Blyth, Policy Analyst at OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments, talked about  ‘Changes in perception of spaces for self-education, innovation and knowledge exchange’.

Alexey Zakharov, Associate Professor in the department of Advanced Mathematics in the HSE Faculty of Economics, is a member of the Committee of the European Political Science Association - a professional community of specialists who apply a variety of different methods in their analysis of the field as it is understood today.

In October 2012, the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA) and the Higher School of Economics held an international workshop ‘Labor Market Adjustment in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Central Asia and China in the Wake of the Great Recession’. Vladimir Gimpelson, Director of the HSE Centre for Labour Market Studies, spoke to us about the event and its results.

HSE Professor, Yevgeny Gontmakher explains exactly how the results of the last elections are reflected in the new 'Putin doctrine' – isolationism, a rejection of European values and resetting the relationship with society. 'In the near future', he says, 'we can expect a purge of the elite and the introduction of full-scale censorship.'

This year two volumes of the new six-volume academic publication ‘World History’ have come out. Pavel Uvarov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the HSE Department of Social History and chief editor of the second volume, which is dedicated to the history of Western and Eastern peoples in the Middle Ages, spoke to us about the book.

From October 25^th – 28^th an international academic conference ‘Embeddedness and beyond: Do sociological theories meet economic realities?’ took place at the HSE. Here are some video interviews with conference participants.

On October 10^th, 2012, a new research into ‘The Economy of Runet 2011-2012’ was presented at the Ria Novosti press centre in Moscow. Together with experts from different institutions, staff of the HSE participated in developing the methodology and implementation of the project. The research provides an in-depth report into the state of the of the internet economy, the dynamics of its development, structure and areas of growth and the obstacles it is facing.
