HSE Faculty of Chemistry Professor Wins Vyzov Prize
On December 9, 2024, the winners of the Vyzov Prize for Future Technologies were announced. Professor Leonid Fershtat from the Joint Department of Organic Chemistry with the RAS Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry was honoured in the ‘Future’ category for his advanced research on creating functional organic materials for multi-purpose use based on high-nitrogen molecular architectures.

Jorge Luis Méndez-Martínez, Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Logic, Linguistics and Formal Philosophy, was named the winner of a competition of the National Council for Sciences, Technology and Humanities of Mexico. He was selected from hundreds of applicants for the position of Researcher for Mexico and will be working on a project on the philosophy of sound and auditory perception and the history of science in Mexico, Russia, and the Soviet Union. The HSE News Service talked to Mr Méndez-Martínez about the competition, his projects,and how playing the guitar helps him conduct research.

The awards ceremony for the international Yandex ML Prize was held in Moscow. This year, all three winners in the ‘ML Educators’ category were HSE faculty members—Evgeny Sokolov, Associate Professor and Head of the Big Data and Information Retrieval School, Anton Konushin, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, and Aleksei Shpilman, Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics at HSE’s St Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

Artificial intelligence will not replace medical professionals but can serve as an excellent assistant to them. Healthcare requires advanced technologies capable of rapidly analysing and monitoring patients' conditions. HSE scientists have integrated AI in preoperative planning and postoperative outcome evaluation for spinal surgery and developed an automated intelligent system to assess the biomechanics of the arms and legs.

‘I Came Up with the Idea to Create an Application Useful for Practicing Physicians’
Dmitry Ryabtsev, a 2024 graduate of the master's programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, created an AI-powered software service for ophthalmology during his two years of study. This product is now entering the market, and its developer plans to participate in establishing a working group on software engineering for medical applications at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, with the goal of promoting more genuinely useful domestic projects.
