Valery Kalyagin, Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science and Tenured Professor at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, has been named a laureate of the national ‘Professor of the Year’ award in the Central Federal District.

Researchers from HSE, MIPT, and the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Solid State Physics, jointly with colleagues from the UK, Switzerland, and China, have conducted a study on the characteristics of thin films composed of platinum and niobium. Both the experiments and the theoretical calculations have confirmed that when in contact with a superconductor, platinum exhibits a spin, creating a potential for its effective use for data transmission. Platinum atoms have no magnetic moment, paving the way for the development of even smaller chips utilising this novel structure compared to conventional spintronics. The paper has been published in Nature Communications.

Students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Privolzhsky Research Medical University have received one million roubles in financial support for the development and testing of StressTouch, an innovative mobile application. The grant was allocated by the Innovation Promotion Foundation (Bortnik Foundation).

The all-Russia prize ‘For Loyalty to Science’ is awarded annually for outstanding achievements in the fields of science communication, science popularisation, and enhancing the prestige of the activities of scientists and engineers in Russia. The prize is held as part of the Decade of Science and Technology and is organised by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

Aleksey Kychkin, a researcher at the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Empirical Studies (LINES), and Oleg Gorshkov, a research assistant at LINES, received a patent for a system that predicts the spatial distribution of harmful substances in atmospheric air using an artificial intelligence unit. The invention can be used for integrated planning and notification of the risks of atmospheric air pollution by harmful substances. The work was carried out under a grant from the HSE University Artificial Intelligence Centre. The Russian Science Foundation has announced the results of the youth contests of the Presidential Programme. HSE University’s early-career researchers are receiving grants for research projects in economics, psychology, sociology, political science, law, mathematics, information science, optics, engineering, and ocean studies.

The Ideas Centre for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research has announced the results of its 2023 competition. Five leading neuroscientists will receive grants to open graduate positions for early-career researchers who want to work on solutions to fundamental problems in this area. Three of the competition winners are scientists from HSE University: Matteo Feurra (HSE University in Moscow), Anastasia Kolmogorova (HSE University in St Petersburg), and Sofia Kulikova (HSE University in Perm).

On May 3rd, a briefing and presentation session of a project for the development of the city's transport scheme took place in the Obninsk administration. This large-scale project has been implemented by staff from the Institute of Transport Economics and Transport Policy Studies of the HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development.
