Digital Skills in Undergraduate Studies: Independent Examinations and External Assessment of Digital Competencies

According to the Concept for Developing HSE University Students’ Digital Skills, every undergraduate and specialist degree student must attain a minimum necessary level in three digital skills (Digital Literacy, Algorithm Thinking and Programming, Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence methods), tailored for each degree programme and field of study. There are five levels of digital skills mastering, and each of these levels is a progression from the previous one.

This initiative responds to the growing labour market demand for specialists capable of professionally working with data and using digital tools for information processing. To this end, the Data Culture project has been established university-wide, and the curriculum of each programme now includes various components aimed at achieving digital competencies: these can be compulsory courses, elective courses, and elements of project and practical work.

Per each of the three digital skills (Digital Literacy, Programming, Data Analysis), the following are provided:

a) A study course (prerequisite course)* that aids in mastering the material and practising problem-solving, which concludes with an interim assessment and is conducted by the instructors who taught the classes.

b) An independent examination in digital skills (hereinafter—DS exam), containing tasks to check and determine the level of digital competency formation; conducted online with proctoring. A unified set of tasks for the university is used; developed at HSE University.

c) An external assessment of digital skills is conducted after each independent exam. It records the individual progress of the student compared to their previous performance and indicates the student’s and HSE's relative position on the "national" map of students' digital skills.

*On some educational programmes, offered as an elective to students whose level allows them to pass exams without it

This page lists the main provisions for assessing digital competencies at HSE University, organised into two sections according to the table of contents.

DS exams are conducted separately from the assessment of the results of courses aimed at developing digital skills. During the exam, students are required to demonstrate proficiency in these skills at a level not below the minimum necessary for their degree programme.
To determine how the digital skills of HSE University students compare with the similar competencies and knowledge of other students in the Russian Federation, an external assessment is further conducted. It is mandatory for students of educational programmes that include it in their curriculum, as well as for those specified by the order of the coordinating Vice-Rector.
