Course Syllabus

Course syllabus is a document delineating the content and structure of an academic course. It offers students the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the course objectives and anticipated learning outcomes, the curriculum, recommended reading materials, class delivery method, forms of assessment, and additional rules. The syllabus serves an organisational function, setting clear rules for interaction between students and instructors.

The syllabus is made available on the university portal no later than five days before the beginning of the module in which it will be conducted. All course syllabi can be accessed on the HSE University website via the database of all courses: http://www.hse.ru/edu/courses/

Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the syllabi of their courses well in advance to pose any questions to the instructor as early as possible.

In response to the evolving nature of the subject matter, course syllabi may periodically be revised independently of their scheduled implementation—any such modifications will be communicated to students via email or SmartLMS.

Instructors may also make minor adjustments to the number and procedures of assessment components. These changes must be recorded in the syllabus, and students must be separately informed about the alterations and their reasons. Notification must occur no later than three days before the commencement of the assessment component affected, which is not an examination. Within three days of notification, students have the right to contact the academic supervisor of their programme to report the changes. The academic supervisor then makes a final decision on the feasibility of these changes. If the academic supervisor opposes the proposed changes, they will inform the instructor via email. Regarding minor changes to the exam procedures conducted during the exam session, the instructor must inform students during the last class of the course before the examination period begins or, in the case of the asynchronous delivery method, in writing no later than five academic days before the exam week.

Further details are available in the Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessments of Students at HSE University.

In the event of disagreements with an instructor regarding the syllabus, students may seek assistance from the manager of their programme’s study office or the staff of the Department Service Centre.
