A panel session on “Modernizing Welfare in Russia and Other Post-Soviet States: Deinstitutionalization, Inclusion, and Agency” was successfully organized and held by the International Laboratory of Social Integration Studies (ILSIS) at the XXII April International Scientific Conference on Economic and Social Development to be held on 21 April, 2021 via Microsoft Team Platform in order to interact with presenters and participants from different parts of the world.
On April 22 Maria Terskova (MA, Junior Research Fellow, Scientific and Educational Laboratory of Psychology of Social Inequality, National Research University Higher School of Economics) took part in the "Culture matters" research seminar with the report "Factors of dehumanization of performers of "dirty" work: stigmatization and social status".
What is affect and why is it important for humans? How can feelings be defined and what is their relation to emotions and consciousness? What might be used in making a soft robot? Professor Antonio Damasio (University of Southern California, USA) discussed these and other questions in his honorary lecture, entitled 'Feeling, Knowing, and Artificial Intelligence'.The talk was delivered on April 16 at the at the XXII April International Academic Conference held by HSE University jointly with Sberbank.
Within the framework of the RSF project (No. 20-18-00268), John W. Berry and Dmitry Grigoryev prepared a report on intercultural relations in Canada for Environics Institute. The report draws on some of the findings from a study conducted using representative data from the Race Relations in Canada 2019 survey, which tested some of the assumptions from the adaptationist reconceptualization of intergroup contact theory proposed by the authors of the report.

In March 2021 the HSE University and Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) were awarded an institutional partnership grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to foster cooperation between these two institutions and to involve in it a broader group of younger fellows and doctoral students. On May 27th this project will start with a digital workshop "Varieties of Populism in East and West" (deadline for submission is April 23rd; for more info about the workshop see the link at the end of the news). We interviewed Professor Dr. Katharina Bluhm, director of the Institute for East European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, about the goals of this project and prospects of cooperation between the HSE University and the FUB.
HSE University researchers have identified the genes that play a crucial role in breast cancer metastasis. The results of the study were published in the journal PLOS ONE.
