The eighth scientific seminar ‘Modern demography’ was held on the 14^th of November. Inna A. Danilova, junior researcher at the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE, research fellow at the Data laboratory of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, presented on the "analysis of the quality of mortality data by cause of death in Russia and its regions".

The fifth scientific seminar ‘Modern demography’ of the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE took place on the 7^th of September. On this seminar researches on cancer and its determinants based on the data from cancer registers and the role of cancer registers in determining the real status of oncological aid provided to the population were discussed. Giedre Smailyte, head of the Laboratory of cancer epidemiology of the National cancer institute, Vilnius, Lithuania, Domantas Jasilionis, research scientist at the Laboratory of Demographic data of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock, Germany and Vakhtang M. Merabishvili, head of the Population based cancer register of St. Petersburg, chairman of the Scientific and methodological council for the development of information systems of the cancer service of the North-Western Federal District of Russia, St. Petersburg, Russia, presented their papers.

In July 2017, the HSE Institute of Education welcomed its first international summer school Inequality of Educational Opportunities. Organized by the IOE International Laboratory for Education Policy Analysis, this venue aimed to promote best-practice approaches to inequality research through multi-dimensional academic debate and learning about today’s advanced methodology in social data analysis.

Nemtsov, MD, the head of the department of Moscow research institute of psychiatry of the Ministry of health of the Russian Federation, presented a paper on alcohol consumption in Russia in 1965-2015.

Center for Language and Brain launched a new collaboration project together with the speech therapy center Children's Academy of Speech, which provides intervention and treatment for children with language-learning difficulties or delays in cognitive and behavioural development.

National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) and Brazilian Center for Strategic Studies and Management in Science, Technology and Innovation (CGEE) founded an International Foresight Centers Network. Russia’s fresh water supply is among the largest in the world, but these resources are not always used efficiently. According to Yuri Golubkov, director of S&T Policy and Modernisation department of Renova Group of Companies, optimising the water sector management first of all requires sorting out organisational and legal issues, followed by solving technological problems. In the framework of a joint HSE — Renova foresight project, HSE experts analysed strategic approaches to managing the water sector suggesting four different scenarios.
