Abstract

Abstract. The main purpose of the course "International Energy Markets" is to form a system of students' knowledge about the mechanisms and conditions of conducting international energy business; the state, problems, quantitative guidelines and prospects for the development of the economy of the fuel and energy sector as a whole and separately by major segments (oil, gas, coal industry) in the world. The discipline "International Energy Markets" is an integral element of the system of economic education in universities, as it develops a system of knowledge necessary for scientific research and practical work among economists. Knowledge of the patterns and quantitative indicators of the fuel and energy complex in the economy, the specifics of the functioning of the main energy markets, the peculiarities of pricing and taxation, investment project management, energy policy of countries and regions of the world are necessary for the training of specialists in accordance with the basic educational program. The course includes the study of the current state and trends in the development of the global energy market. The specifics of the functioning of markets, the role of international organizations and TNCs, the economy of individual sectors of the energy industry, as well as the importance and ways to ensure energy security of the leading countries of the world will also be considered in detail.

Learning Objectives

to study the mechanisms and conditions of the international energy business, the concept, form and procedure for concluding international commercial contracts in the energy sector, types of payments in the international energy business, national and regional characteristics of the international energy business, volumes, structure and directions of energy supply
to analyze the current state and main trends in the development of the global fuel and energy complex; to determine the role and importance of the oil industry, gas, coal industry in the energy sector and the national economy;
to study the specifics of the functioning of the world's main energy markets (North American, European, Asia-Pacific). The volume and structure of production and consumption of oil, gas, coal, and electricity in Russia and abroad.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Students will be familiar with theoretical issues and empirical questions related to the subject. It is also expected that students will have good methodological and technical skills in the field of analysis and work with statistics and text, necessary for studying global energy markets.
Students will come out of this course with an expertise on the mechanisms and conditions for the development of the international energy business; about the conditions, problems, quantitative guidelines and prospects for the development of the economy of the fuel and energy complex as a whole and separately by major segments (oil, gas, coal) in the world. At the end of the course, students will acquire an ability to do an independent research for academic purposes.
