Luria's approach to aphasia: syndrome analysis"
Boston aphasia classification is widely used for diagnostic and treatment evaluation purposes in individuals with brain damage and related language impairments. It is based on a limited number of specific measures of linguistic performance. A totally different approach to classify aphasia was suggested by a Russian neuropsychologist Alexander Luria. Luria was an advocate of syndrome analysis and qualitative identification of a disrupted common neuropsychological factor underlying a patient’s deficit and manifested in different cognitive domains. In this talk, theoretical basis of Luria’s aphasia classification will be discussed and compared to the Boston tradition. A particular attention will be paid to so-called semantic aphasia, which is not included in the Boston classification and presumably does not exist in the Western world.
