Dear Colleagues!
Center for Language and Brain at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) once again invites you to join us at our third annual Summer School, "Aphasia Assessment, Treatment and Recovery". The event will take place in Moscow, Russia, July 2nd – 4th, 2016. The purpose of the school is to continue an annual scientific and educational program in the experimental studies of language and to create an academic environment for discussion of scientific ideas, clinical applications and the latest achievements in the field. This year the school will be devoted to various assessment and treatment approaches to aphasia, including aspects of clinical application and research. Lectures will be provided by such esteemed world-renowned speakers as Audrey Holland (University of Arizona), Brooke Hallowell (Ohio University), Nina Dronkers (University of California) and Roelien Bastiaanse (University of Groningen).
What to expect?
The school program will include three days of invited talks and one poster session. The first day will focus on how approaches to aphasia management have evolved over the course of the last 50 years, including general strategies for the assessment of individuals with aphasia (Hallowell) and methods in contemporary evidence-based practice (Ivanova). The second day of the school will be split between two topics. First, neuroimaging methods and their role in assessment and treatment of neurogenic language disorders will be discussed (Dronkers), followed by a detailed presentation of social approaches to aphasia rehabilitation (Holland). The third day will be dedicated to specific linguistic assessment and treatment approaches (Bastiaanse) and the process of adapting treatment protocols into a new language (Akinina). Over the course of three days, attendees will learn about basic concepts of evidence-based practice, assessment and treatment methodology, gain in-depth knowledge about different types of contemporary treatment approaches to aphasia and clinical application of specific therapies, as well as recent advances in understanding the neural underpinnings of language recovery. The expertise of the invited Russian and foreign experts guarantees the high quality of the training.
Who should be interested?
The program will be of interest to professionals and students in the fields of Speech Pathology, Psychology, Medicine, Neuroscience, and Linguistics as well as to all interested in the neural bases of language, neurogenic language disorders, neurorehabilitation and speech-language therapy for people with neurogenic language and cognitive disorders. The content of the lectures will be informative both for professionals involved in clinical work and for those with more of a research focus. Novices in this area as well as experts from related areas who have a basic knowledge of speech-language pathology, neurolinguistics and brain disorders will benefit from attending this school. All participants will expand their knowledge about the contemporary multidisciplinary area of aphasia and learn about modern assessment and treatment approaches for neurogenic communication disorders.
