Perfect Spots to Pause and Appreciate the Quiet Rhythm of Winter
In this latest batch of winter leisure recommendations from interns of the HSE University website team, Daniil talks about a tranquil park just next to the buzzing Moscow City and Alina shares her selection of ice-skating rinks.
Daniil Maiorov
My name is Daniil and I am a senior-year student of the School of Foreign Languages at HSE. To tell you the truth, I am not really an outgoing person—I prefer to spend my free time at home playing computer games or doing sports. However, when I actually do feel like going out, there is a place that I enjoy visiting. Among the countless parks in Moscow, I have come across one which, unlike Zaryadye, Izmailovo or Gorky, is always full of peace and quiet.
Krasnogvardeyskie Prudy, a serene escape nestled in the Presnensky District of Moscow, transforms into a picturesque retreat during the winter months
This tranquil spot, composed of a series of small ponds surrounded by peaceful walkways, becomes a canvas of pristine snow and icy reflections. As the ponds freeze over, they mirror the silhouettes of bare trees and the occasional flutter of snowflakes, creating a scene of natural elegance. It is a perfect place to enjoy leisurely strolls along the well-maintained paths, whether on a date with someone else or tête-à-tête with your own thoughts. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, as ducks gather at pockets of unfrozen water, adding a lively charm to the atmosphere. Benches dot the area, offering perfect spots to pause and appreciate the quiet rhythm of winter. On particularly sunny days, the low winter sun casts a golden glow across the ponds, enhancing their beauty. Located away from the city’s bustling centre, Krasnogvardeyskie Prudy offers a rare opportunity to connect with nature and embrace the slower pace of the season, making it a cherished winter retreat for those seeking calm and inspiration.
Alina Tasukhajieva
My name is Alina and I am a student of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication at HSE. I am a very active person who enjoys going out and exploring new activities, but due to a lack of time there are not many opportunities to do so. In my opinion, there is no other sight as beautiful and magnificent as Moscow in winter. The whole city shines with thousands of lights, full of snow and New Year decorations and with Christmas trees on almost every street. All of this creates an impression that you are in a fairy tale.
One of my favorite winter activities in Moscow is ice skating.
There are many different ice rinks to choose from, so each of you can find the one that you like the most
If you want to dive into the atmosphere of the winter holidays, you should check out the ice rink at VDNH—one of the biggest in Moscow, by the way—or the one at GUM, where there is also a winter market with traditional winter food and snacks, souvenirs, and even some attractions. Entrance is free at GUM and from 300 rubles per session at VDNH. It is better to buy tickets in advance because these two places are the most popular in Moscow. There are also ice rinks in many parks, for example Sokolniki, Gorky Park, and Hermitage Garden. The price is the same, from 300 rubles per session, but the size and atmosphere differ from place to place. But one of the best options is the ice rink at Severny Vokzal because it is free and there are fewer people, so it is more comfortable to skate there. Don’t forget to register in advance and enjoy your winter in Moscow!
