Course Syllabus
Abstract
The main goal of the course is to assist students in developing skills required for providing independent research and writing high-quality term/diploma papers. A particular attention is given to formulation of a proper research question, embedding the research into relevant body of academic literature, hypotheses testing, usage of proper analytical tools, and presentation of obtained results. Within the course, students shall also develop their presentation skills as speakers in special research meetings (particularly, pre-defence sessions in the Spring semester). The course is intended for 4th-year undergraduate students of the International College of Economics and Finance. The course is compulsory. BSc students of years from 1 to 3 can participate in seminars as well. The course consists of lectures and seminars on the research skills, as well as presentations of the students of their intermediate results in thematic groups under the guidance of ICEF full-time academics and part-time teachers (pre-defences session). The course is taught in English.
Learning Objectives
- Development of research skills necessary to design and complete a good (feasible, interesting, novel, relevant) research project
- Development of analytical skills typical of contemporary research papers in economics and finance
- Improvement of skills in searching and processing research-relevant information. This includes academic literature search technologies, working with various electronic databases, HSE electronic library resources etc
- Development of data processing, analytics and visualization skills using appropriate software packages
- Development of academic writing skills (including correct formatting of the paper and citing)
- Strengthen students’ presentation skills and abilities to participate in scientific discussions
- Stimulation of communication between students and teachers fostering academic environment

Course Contents
- Introduction into research work (research question and structuring of the paper, organization of work)
- Working with different Data sources: HSE e-library, citation databases
- Working with different Data sources: RLMS, Bloomberg
- Working with statistical software (ARP)
- Methods of economic research (theory, empirics, experiment)
- Presentation skills
- Presenting topic of diploma paper (motivation and goals of research) and obtained results (pre-defense)
Interim Assessment
- 2021/2022 4th module0.5 * presentation at the pre-defense session + 0.5 * attendance of the pre-defense sessions
