Course Syllabus
Abstract
Designed for senior undergraduate students, this elective course aims to help them develop their proficiency in academic English discourse. Special emphasis is placed on English for research purposes. The course addresses both writing and speaking conventions of research English and teaches students to produce their papers according to the IMRAD pattern which guides the writing of most research articles: examined and practiced are such sections as Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, and Results. Students also practice their academic speaking skills aimed at presenting effectively their research at conferences, seminars and suchlike forums. Particular attention is given to drafting the English-mediated version of the senior thesis referred to in HSE official documents as Project Proposal.
Learning Objectives
- The complex development of academic skills: ● to structure various academic texts in a particular professional field (introduction- body-conclusion), with a focus on paragraph division, identifying main and supporting points, and developing an argument with the help of relevant sources; ● to create academic professionally-oriented texts describing the project proposal (2000-3000 words), including an analytical review of the literature in the English language relevant to the topic of the project proposal; ● to create a Project Proposal text in the English language and be able to defend it in a form of oral presentation; ● to familiarize students with the conventions of academic English for research writing, including language features and referencing styles; ● to familiarize students with the IMRAD pattern; ● to teach students how to draft, revise, and edit pieces of a research paper; ● to teach students how to present their research at academic forums (conferences, seminars, symposia, etc.) and formal examination events (project and thesis defense).
Expected Learning Outcomes

- 1. Introduction to the course “Academic Writing in the English language.
- 2. General principles of academic writing.
- 3. Working with scientific texts in a particular professional field.
- 4. Preparation for writing a Project Proposal.
- 5. Speaking for specific academic purposes: giving a presentation.

- Introduction*0,2The final grade is composed of the following parts: 20% Introduction + 20% Literature Review+10% Results Anticipated+10% Abstract + 20% Student Independent Work (IW) + 20% Class Participation (CP). Only the overall grade is rounded up. Retaking: Written assignments can be resubmitted within 10 days if a student has an official excuse confirmed by a medical certificate. The 10-day period starts from the last day of the medical leave. This, however, does not apply to Student Independent Work and Class Participation.

- Student Independent Work (IW)*0,2Independent work includes activities that students do at home and/or online work. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken. 100-96% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 10; 95-91% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 9; 90-86% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 8; 85-78% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 7; 77-71% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 6; 70-61% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 5; 60-51% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 4; 50-36% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 3; 35-21% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 2; 20-1% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 1, 0% of fully completed tasks at home/online work = 0. A fully completed task means that an assigned task meets the deadline and all the requirements.
- Class Participation *0,2Classroom activity includes activities that students do in the classroom: tests; presentations, discussions, etc. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken. Grading scale for tests: 10 =100 - 96%, 9=95 - 91%, 8=90 - 86%, 7 = 85 - 78%, 6 =77 - 71%, 5= 70 - 61%, 4 = 60 - 51%, 3 = 50 - 36%, 2 = 35 - 21%, 1 = 20 - 1 %, 0 = 0%.
