Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course «Macroeconomics» is designed for providing students with the basic knowledge in the field of macroeconomic theory. They are introduced to essential principles of macroeconomic analysis. The course forms a comprehensive understanding of the functioning of aggregated markets (goods market, financial market and labor market), and of the influence of decisions, made by various economic agents (households, businesses, government, central bank), on the dynamics of key macroeconomic variables in the short and long run.

  • Comprehension of basic principles of macroeconomic analysis, with their application to current macroeconomic processes in the Russian and global economy

  • - Apply the acquired knowledge to the analysis of domestic and foreign macroeconomic statistics.
  • - Be able to analyze the basic functional relations between different macroeconomic variables in the short- and long run.
  • - Be able to use the tools of simple modelling to critically evaluate macroeconomic effects of monetary and fiscal policies in different phases of the business cycle.
  • - Understand and explain possible macroeconomic consequences of decisions, made by economic agents in the closed and open economy.
  • - Understand contemporary debates about the macroeconomic situation in Russia and in the world.

  • Section 5. Business Cycles: IS-LM Model.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Class participation (quizzes)
    Students’ effort during classes is evaluated by the results of regular quizzes. Quiz may consist of multiple choice questions (with one or several correct answers) and/or true-false statements.
  • non-blocking Midterm test
    Components: 1) Multiple choice questions (with one or several correct answers). 2) Statements (a student has to unambiguously assess every statement on a “true” - “false” scale with the necessary justification). 3) Analytical (numerical) problems that are to be solved with a use of key models, graphs and/or analytical apparatus from the course. A student has to provide the solution process in details.
  • blocking Final exam
