Course Syllabus
Abstract
Heidegger is arguably the most important philosopher of the 20th Century. From his major work, "Being and Time" to his “Letter on Humanism,” Heidegger seeks to raise (once again) the question of the meaning of being. In this course, we will attempt to raise this question for ourselves. In so doing, we will also examine questions of knowledge and self-knowledge, nature and world, thinking and acting, subjectivity and death, violence and metaphysics, ethics and politics.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students will learn how to: do philosophical research; from this research (reading, thinking), come to establish evidence; from evidence, or its absence, make inferences; test the validity of inferences, come to philosophical intuitions; take those intuitions and develop a thesis; consider the thesis’ validity, and use evidence and reason to construct arguments; test the arguments to determine how convincing they are, and challenge the arguments of others by employing critical analysis.
