Course Syllabus

Abstract

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and factors of health and disease in human populations and the art of applying those finding to improve disease outcomes. Epidemiology generates the information used by public health practicians to develop, implement, and evaluate effective intervention programmes. This course introduces the basic concepts of epidemiology and demonstrates how they can be applied to public health problems. Special attention is paid to the principles and methods of epidemiologic research, appropriate summaries and displays of data, and the use of classical statistical approaches to describe the health of populations.

  • Able to define and apply the concepts of health and illness, biomedical model of health, the sick role (Parsons), ‘badness’ versus ‘sickness’, total institutions, 'clinical gaze', 'biomedical discourse', public health policy, medicalisation, bioengineering, ‘biological underclass’, iatrogenesis, impairment and disability, individual model of disability, stigma.
  • Applying HRQoL concepts and tools to the development of a public health intervention
