Abstract
This is an interdisciplinary course which analyzes problems faced by countries with economies in transition and countries with emerging markets, namely, those middle and low income countries that have implemented market economic reforms and become integrated into the world economy since the 1990s. It starts with a brief history of the communist economic system based on central planning in the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe, its development and collapse in the late 1980s / early 1990s and the subsequent transition to a market system in the 1990s and 2000s. Then it analyzes the experience of market reforms in China, India, other Asian countries, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America at the same period.
