Abstract

As part of this workshop, students will read (in the original language) and discuss, under the guidance of a teacher, Pseudo-Efremov's "Cave of Treasures," a 6th-century piece of classical Syriac literature that paraphrases a biblical story. The main goal of the seminar is to familiarize students with the methods of textual, philological and historical analysis in relation to Syriac works of the Late Antiquity. Particular attention will be paid to the problems of criticism of the text of the monument, its relationship with the biblical original, Jewish and patristic traditions of biblical exegesis, as well as the culture of Zoroastrian Iran.
