Abstract
This is an introductory course on presenting the results of a project in English. The course is specially tailored to meet the needs of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students who are working on IT projects. We will learn how to make audience-oriented project presentations (pitches) and how to write concise project reports that will maximize reader’s understanding with minimal effort. All classes are held in English. The course includes writing a project report and giving a project pitch as part of the assessment process as well as studying authentic scientific literature to acquire language means necessary for professional communication.
Learning Objectives
- This course will help STEM students present their projects effectively both in written and spoken formats. STEM Students will understand and practice the elements needed to successfully deliver their project pitches to wide audiences and will be equipped with the tools to write a properly structured project report.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Upon completing this course, students will acquire practical skills in making project pitches
- Upon completing this course, students will practice public speaking
- Upon completing this course, students will acquire practical skills in presenting project results in a written form (making a project report)
- Upon completing this course, students will know how to use punctuation marks properly
Assessment Elements
- independent workКритерии оценивания The final grade is calculated based on a 10-point scale. A student is awarded 1 point for each assignment which is fully completed and submitted on time. Комментарий Independent work includes various types of activities that students do at home. To receive full marks, home assignments must be fully completed and submitted on time. A home assignment partially completed and/or submitted after the due date is not assessed. If an assignment does not have a due date, students must submit it before the beginning of a class. To submit a home assignment, a student does not need to be present in class. Возможность пересдачи This element cannot be retaken
- project pitchThe project pitch is assessed according to the criteria. The final grade is calculated based on a 10-point scale. Возможность пересдачи The pitch can be retaken if a student missed it for a valid reason. The absence must be documented (e.g. doctor’s confirmation). The pitch can be retaken within 10 working days after the day a student returns to classes.
- examКритерии оценивания The project report is assessed according to the criteria. The final grade is calculated based on a 10-point scale. Комментарий The exam involves writing a report of one’s own research project
Interim Assessment
- 2022/2023 4th moduleThis element is assessed by a faculty member of the Department of Applied Mathematics. The working language can be English or Russian. - If the project is defended at the project committee meeting, the awarded grade is counted towards the final grade. The format of the project defence should meet the requirements introduced by the project committee. - If the project hasn’t been defended yet: – the project hasn’t been chosen by a student: a student is given the grade “0”; – the project has been chosen; less than one credit is awarded to a student for their work on the project (see the project account on cabinet.miem.hse.ru): a student is awarded the grade “4” – the project has been chosen and presented to the project committee, the committee awarded an unsatisfactory grade or the project defence was postponed: a student is awarded the grade “4” – the project has been chosen, more than one credit is awarded to a student for their work (see the project account on cabinet.miem.hse.ru): a student is awarded the grade “6”
- 2023/2024 3rd module0.4 * exam + 0.3 * independent work + 0.3 * project pitch
